14.11.10 Florence

florence is in the tuscany region of italy.  places of interest include Piazza del Duomo & Ponte Vecchio.
1st stop of the day: Piazzale Michelangelo, a famous square with a magnificent panoramic view of Florence, Italy.  standing there is a copy of Michelangelo’s David.
poor david, with so much stains...

as we visited europe in november, its considered start of winter.  the days generally look gloomy with shorter daylight too.

River Arno

we can see Ponte Vecchio from this spot (at Michelangelo Park)

lunch at own expense. we had great italian pizza with toppings, unlike the plain margarita pizza we had ytd.

next stop, Piazza del Duomo

the weather is gloomy and drizzling. this is the Florence Baptistery or Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptistery of St. John).
the octagonal Baptistery stands in both the Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza di San Giovanni, across from the Duomo cathedral and the Giotto bell tower (Campanile di Giotto).

the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is the cathedral church (Duomo) of Florence, Italy.

Giotto’s Campanile is a free-standing campanile that is part of the complex of buildings that make up Florence Cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo in Florence, Italy.

the exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink bordered by white and has an elaborate 19th century Gothic Revival facade by Emilio De Fabris.

the Baptistery is renowned for its three sets of artistically important bronze doors with relief sculptures. the south doors were done by Andrea Pisano and the north and east doors by Lorenzo Ghiberti. the east pair of doors was dubbed by Michelangelo "the Gates of Paradise".
this is the right panel of the east door.

inside the duomo

in front is the Palazzo Vecchio (Italian pronunciation: [paˈlattso ˈvɛkkjo] "Old Palace") is the town hall of Florence, Italy.

overlooking the Piazza della Signoria with its copy of Michelangelo's David statue.  the original David by Michelangelo is being kept at the Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts.

a much cleaner version of david

"Hercules and Cacus", by Bandinelli (1533)

Piazza della Signoria is an L-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. Located near Ponte Vecchio and Piazza del Duomo and gateway to Uffizi Gallery.

the "bronze equestrian statue of Cosimo I" by Giambologna (1594)

the Fountain of Neptune by Bartolomeo Ammannati (1575)

the Loggia dei Lanzi, also called the Loggia della Signoria, is a building on a corner of the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy, adjoining the Uffizi Gallery.

this is Piazza della Repubblica (Italian pronunciation: [ˈpjattsa dɛlla reˈpubblika], Republic Square) a city square in Florence, Italy.

today's the sunday market.

the 'gao lak' stores in Italy are manned by young chaps as compared to Singapore - by uncles!!

they also have such locks display here (just like N Seoul Tower in Korea)

the Ponte Vecchio ("Old Bridge", Italian pronunciation: [ˈponte ˈvɛkkjo]), is a Medieval bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy.

the Ponte Vecchio has been described as Europe's oldest wholly-stone, closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge. It is noted for still having shops built along it. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewellers, art dealers and souvenir sellers.

when up-close, think its about time for repainting.
